FACS 300: Interior Design III

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE PROJECT

DESIGN PROCESS: ADJACENCY MATRIX, BUBBLE DIAGRAMS, BLOCKING PLANS

One of the first steps in the design process is to create diagrams to set out your ideas. The first step was to create an adjacency matrix that showed the relationship of the spaces, whether they are public or private, or how close they are in relation to each other. The second step was to create bubble diagrams that displayed the relationships created in the adjacency matrix. Lastly, once the bubble diagrams were created, the blocking plans were made to show a layout of the rooms to scale, similar to a floor plan. Each of the steps was color coded the same to show their relationships such as public/private, memory care, or assisted living. These steps even though they are apart of the process have changed in the final floor plan, some parts are not even close to being the same, but that is the process of design!

DESIGN PROCESS:  PRELIMINARY PLANS

*Created using AutoCAD & Canva

Preliminary Plans------- This is the first step where our vision comes to life in a floor plan. There are still flaws and things to work through, but it gives an idea of where each of the spaces, hallways, doorways, etc. are going to go. I personally did not like the plan I was creating at the beginning of the design process, so I removed and changed many different things. However, this plan is what I came up with finally. I wanted to make sure to still keep private and public spaces apart, along with memory care and assisted living spaces. On the left wing, is the assisted living apartment, which is two floors, and it connects to the public amenities such as movie theater, gym, library, etc. Lastly, the memory care apartments were placed on the right wing of the building. Not included are the pool and garden area outside.

FF&E: FINISH SCHEDULE, FINISH LEGEND, FURNITURE & FIXTURE SCHEDULE

*Created using Microsoft Excel

Once the Preliminary Plans were completed, it was time to start picking out all of the details such as fixtures, paint, trim, furniture, etc! This was one of the most fun parts of the project because it was where you could create the aesthetic you were going for. What I chose to go with was a modern lakehouse aesthetic which included a lot of natural wood, greenery, natural light, and beige colors. I wanted to create a comfortable, cozy space that would allow the residents to feel at home and I believe each of the items I chose would help create that vision!

RENDERINGS: DINING AREA & APARTMENT SPACES

*Created using SketchUp & Podium

Once the FF&E portion was completed, it was time to put that vision to life by creating these 3-D renderings in SketchUp! The first few images include images of the dining area, with lots of natural light, simplicity of natural colors, and little bits of greenery. The last two images are of the apartment areas such as the bedroom and bathroom, which are continuing the cozy and comfortable style.

CONCEPT SKETCHES: RECEPTION AREA & SKYLIGHT LOUNGE

*Created using 2B Black Marker

Concept Sketches are to show what our vision for the areas is to look like. The concept sketches I chose to display are the reception area desk and skylight lounge area. These are just rough sketches to show what I visualize the space to look like.

3-D MODEL

*Created using SketchUp

The 3-D Model was created using SketchUp, which allowed me to input the AutoCAD file of my floor plan and pull it up using the tools provided. This model shows realistically what my Smith Mountain Lake Assisted Living Project would look like completed.

REFINED PLANS

*Created Using AutoCAD & Canva

The final step in the design process, the refined plans! These plans have been fixed for the errors that were on the preliminary plans. The refined plans include room numbers, bar scale, and north arrow. Also, there is furniture placed in every space to visualize how the room would look finished.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS

* Created Using Canva

Our final assignment for this class was to present our projects to the class. The purpose of this presentation was to market our assisted living facility and try to sell it as best as possible to the audience. For the posters, I want to make sure to include all of the main details that stand out in my facility and highlight it. Below, I attached my research paper that contributed to this entire project.
