ARTS 114: Introduction to 3D Design

Rhythm and Proportion

Bear: Created with White Clay

Bear: Created with White Clay

For this project, we were to create a project that expresses rhythm by designing a Planar Reduction version of a master's naturalistic sculpture using multiple faceted planes to describe the form. The proportions are to remain the same as that of the master's work, but the style will be simplified. This sculpture is to be formed using the coiling technique.

The shape I chose to make was a bear. For the first part, I began sketching out what I wanted the sculpture to be with faceted planes. Once I sketched out my design, I began to coil and shape the bear using the techniques learned in the class lectures. After I shaped out the bear, I went back in with a little water and smoothed out all of the lines. The bear was then placed onto a wooden plate.

The next part of this assignment was to simplify the bear by adding facted planes. I began to use an exacto knife for precision and cut all of the planes out onto the bear. To finish it off, I went in with water and smoothed out the lines and made sure they were sharp and clean.

Line and Balance

Ballerina: Created with16 gauge utility wire

The goal for this project was to construct a wire sculpture of a human figure in action using asymmetry balance. To begin this project, I brainstormed what kind of human figure I wanted to construct, and settled on creating a ballerina. I began to sketch out what I wanted the ballerina to look like once it was finished. After sketching out my ideas, I started twisting the wire to make the shape. I wanted the ballerina to be posed in arabesque. Arabesque is a pose that ballerinas use where one leg is bent back and up, and the hands are placed backwards and out. I also constructed a tutu, and a bun on the ballerina's head to add shape. Once I completed making the shape with wire, I mounted it onto a wooden plate with a hot glue gun.

Pattern to Balance

Clay Tile: Created with White Clay

This project was one of my favorites of this class. The goal was to create a decorative bas relief clay tile incorporating symmetrical, and assymetrical balance. The design will be seen as a pattern when copies are made and installed side by side. To begin the design process, I sketched out what I wanted the clay tile to look like. My inspiration came from design tile used in your home. Next, I started to roll out my clay and shape it into a square. The next step was to take my design and use transfer paper to transfer it onto the clay tile.  Once that was finished, I cut into the tile to pop up the second layer of clay around my design. To finish up, I used a brush and water to smooth out my design.

Plane to Mass

Robot: Created with Poster Board

For this project, the goal was to contrast curvilinear and rectilinear planes while integrating texture to create a three-dimensional robot out of cardboard, or poster board. To begin the design process, I sketched out on paper what I wanted the robot to look like. Next, I drew out the shapes onto poster board and cut them out. Once they were cut out, I was able to start folding and glueing them like I wanted to. The finishing touches were to add eyes, arms, and buttons to officially make its shape as a robot. Once it was finished, I mounted it onto foam board for a clean finish.
